Scoop two boys into my van while sun shimmers on the dash, wind vibrates a styrofoam cup in the holder.  They swing backpacks loaded full of a week’s work to the floor, climb over golf shoes to seats.  Laughter fills the empty crevices.  One says, “when Friday comes I hear angelic songs in my head” and begins to mimic the sound.  The other echoes in agreement, “yeah, and then everything goes golden.”

First, I snicker at their spontaneous poetry.  Then ponder the truth just spilled from young hearts.  How rejoicing comes easy in what we anticipate as good.  The heart receptive in contentment, the way Boaz receives Ruth after eating and drinking in celebration of the harvest.

We find beauty when we let go of what holds us tense; the cares of life. As Boaz checks his fields and notices Ruth (Ruth 2:4-5), today I check my fields and see the glory hanging overhead turning golden, crimson, sienna.

On the drive home from picking up that ingredient I forgot earlier, I stop with camera in the parking lot of the post office, capture the extraordinary. This chameleon dripping from branches turns my heart golden.  Because what we prepare in spring, brings expectant hope in the fall.

And then I remember this . . .the way the promise showed  itself earlier this week right there on my jeaned leg.

The autumn of the heart is meant to be a season of joy in the key of fulfillment.  What you’ve sown you now reap and store, no regrets. ~Mark Buchanan, Spiritual Rhythm
